Set on the University of Texas campus, the LBJ Presidential Library houses the documents and artifacts of Lyndon Johnson's presidency, with exhibits tracing the 1960s through civil rights, the Great Society, and Vietnam. Don't miss the seven-eighths-scale replica of the Oval Office on the top floor, along with the animatronic LBJ that recounts some of the president's favorite stories in his own Texas drawl.

Three floors of exhibits trace the "Story of Texas" from its Indigenous peoples through Spanish colonization, revolution, and statehood, with the museum's IMAX screen and the special-effects Texas Spirit Theater rounding out a visit. You'll spot it from down Congress Avenue by the giant bronze Lone Star out front, just a few blocks north of the Capitol.

Tucked into Zilker Park along Barton Springs Road, this collection of themed gardens winds across a hillside, with the serene Taniguchi Japanese Garden and its koi ponds usually the first stop visitors gravitate toward. Don't miss the Hartman Prehistoric Garden, planted with cycads and ferns around the site where dinosaur tracks were discovered on the grounds.

Visit Widget's Texas Capitol sits at the head of Congress Avenue, its dome rising a few feet higher than the U.S. Capitol in Washington and clad in distinctive "sunset red" granite quarried from nearby Marble Falls. Free guided tours walk you through the rotunda and legislative chambers, and the surrounding grounds and underground extension are worth the extra time if you have it.
